MAY IS MUSEUM AND GALLERIES MONTH
GO BEHIND THE SCENES

May is Museums and Galleries month. To celebrate visitors can go behind the scenes of Wakefield's museums, galleries and castles. There they can discover the fantastic collections that the museums house and hear museum experts talk about their work and the collections they look after.

Museums and Galleries Month (29 April- 4 June 2006) is the biggest celebration of its kind in the world. Highlighting the wealth of opportunities for entertainment, cultural enrichment and education that the UK's museums and galleries have to offer.

The free talks take place at Wakefield Museum and Pontefract Museum.

May 4 at Wakefield Museum: 
'Wakefield Museum - The History of a Building'

Since the 1840s the Mechanics Institute on Wood Street, now home to Wakefield Museum, has been a place to learn, take a Turkish bath, have a dance, and explore the rainforests of Guyana. Join John Whitaker, Senior Cultural Officer: Social History, and explore how this important building has changed over the last 150 years.

May 11 at Pontefract Museum: 
'The History of a Ruin - Pontefract Castle from 1649'

Where could you play tennis, have tea, lay out the dead or see ghosts? - Pontefract Castle of course. Join Richard Van Riel, Senior Cultural Officer: Pontefract Museum, as he talks about this amazing castle.

May 18 at Wakefield Museum: 
'Preserving Our Past - The Work of a Museum Conservator'

Join Mary Macqueen, Cultural Officer: Conservation, as she discusses the work of a museum conservator and her role with Wakefield's collections.

May 25 at Wakefield Museum: 
'How and Why Items Come into the Museum'

This talk, by Leanne Eskdale, Assistant Registrar, will explain how Cultural Service's staff decide which items are collected for the district's museums, and the steps involved in adding objects to the collections.

Entrance to all the sites is free.
