WAKEFIELD IN BLOOM
HANGING BASKETS AND FLORAL DISPLAYS
Residents
are to be given the chance to help make the Wakefield District a blooming
lovely place in which to live and work.
More
hanging baskets, floral displays, street dressing and environmental
improvements are to be made by Wakefield Council as part of a new
initiative - Wakefield in Bloom.
Workers
will be starting on brightening up the city and town centres very soon -
and there will be opportunities for businesses and citizens of all ages to
join in the fun.
Councillor
Phil Dobson, Deputy Leader of Wakefield Council and Portfolio Member for
Regeneration, said: "Wakefield in Bloom is set to be just the
initiative we need to really brighten up the District. There are already
some wonderful floral displays and gardens but we want to see even more.
"We
hope that individuals, schools, businesses and other organisations will
all join the council in making our city and town centres blooming
lovely!"
Planting
should be in place by early June, and details of where floral displays
will be located, and how residents, local businesses and community groups
can participate will be announced shortly.
Pauline
Foster, Head of City and Town Centre Management, added: "The focus
this year is to work to the high and stringent standards set out by
Yorkshire in Bloom, to create work of exceptional quality, which citizens
are part of and will be proud of. In future years we hope to enter the
Yorkshire in Bloom competition.
"There
are already some fantastic displays in some towns across the District and
we want to build on that and to recognise the efforts businesses,
community groups and individuals have put into floral displays."
Wakefield
in Bloom is the latest in a series of initiatives aimed at improving urban
areas. Work on removing litter and graffiti is already taking place
helping make Wakefield District a more attractive place to visit, work and
live.
