CELEBRATING SURVIVAL
21 FEBRUARY 2006
Behind
the Smile - A Celebration of Survival is an afternoon of music, drama and
words exploring the issue of domestic abuse in recognition of
International Women's Day.
Run
by Wakefield Council and the Well Women Centre the event will feature a-capella
singing from Cana, drama from Artists in Mind and poetry from Michelle
Scally-Clarke and Alex Krysinski. With the exception of Michelle, all
performers are from the Wakefield District.
Cana
is a singing trio with Pam Moxham, Linda Currin and Ali Bullivent. Their
work consists of mainly original pieces and the group's influences include
Celtic, classical and gospel traditions. They also use 20th century
poetry, women artists, descriptive prose and images of women from the
Bible in their work.
The
Artists in Mind production is Reflections of a Child Who Grew Up - an
emotive piece of drama based on local woman Pauline Quinnin's life. The
performance for adults is a tribute to Pauline's recovery from abuse.
Poet
Michelle Scally-Clarke combines words with music and images and has just
returned from performing in America. Alex Krysinski has been a
professional writer, performance poet, editor, trainer and artist for the
last 20 years. She also helps others to develop their writing skills and
has performed nationally and internationally.
Through
this event, Wakefield Council and the Well Women Centre are supporting
Marie House Refuge for Women and Children. On the day they would welcome
any donations or gifts of women's and children's toiletries or packaged
foods for the refuge's welcome packs.
The
Artists in Mind production is not suitable for young children - there is
an African drumming, dance and singing session for children at the same
time in the Town Hall. Professional musicians and performers Thomo Lengne
run the event.
The
event is open to men and women and is on Saturday, March 4 from 1pm to
4.30pm at Wakefield Town Hall, Wood Street, Wakefield. It is a free event
but booking is essential, phone 01924 211114 or 01924 305174.
