HISTORICAL BURIAL
RECORDS AVAILABLE
BOON FOR GENEALOGISTS
Burial
records for most of Wakefield Council's 19 cemeteries dating back nearly
150 years are proving to be internet big hitters for those involved in
family history research.
The
facility to search the actual burial registers has already proved to be
one of the most popular areas of the council website for people interested
in searching for information about their family history.
With
the success of the initial project, which saw the records of three of the
authority's 19 cemeteries being made available online in 2005, plans are
now well underway to bring forward the completion date to have all
historical burial records accessible online by the end of 2006.
Councillor
Graham Isherwood, Cabinet member for Environment, said: "We are
really pleased that making these records publicly accessible has been such
a great success, and hope that by bringing the completion date of the
project forward, even more people will be able to benefit from this
facility."
Graham
Smith, Wakefield's Bereavement Services Manager, said: "I knew that
genealogy is tremendously popular nowadays and hope that people find our
site of use. I am hopeful that the first searchable indexes will be
available online in the next few weeks and am very grateful for the
collaboration of our IT department in making the whole project such a
success. As a Chartermark winner for three times now, one of our
priorities is to improve the access to our service at all levels, and
relatives certainly do seem to appreciate what we are doing."
The
service is accessible from the Genealogy Searches pages in the related
links on the right hand side.
