RHS FLOWER SHOW
BEDDING COMPETITION
TATTON PARK
Following
previous success at the Royal Horticultural Show, staff from Wakefield
Council's Parks and Public Realm Section have been busy working on their
entry for 2006.
It
is the third year running Wakefield's Neighbourhood Services has gained a
place in the RHS Flower Show Bedding competition.
The
inspiration for this year's entry is taken from children's nursery rhyme
'Here we go round the Mulberry Bush' - believed to have started as a chant
by prisoners as they exercised around Wakefield's Prison Yard.
Cabinet
Member for Environment Councillor Graham Isherwood said: "I am
confident we can build on our previous success at the show. Once again the
design represents Wakefield - the nursery rhyme originated at Wakefield
Jail as prisoners exercised. Taking part in the RHS show is a great
experience for everyone involved and we wish them all the best of luck
with their colourful flowerbed design."
The
design shows the path taken by the inmates as they exercised daily around
the mulberry bush.
At
the centre of the display is a 3D stylised sculpture of the Mulberry Bush.
It is made from steel and coated in a bright copper - the branches will
bear fruit which will move in the breeze.
Within
the planting scheme there is also a large keyhole with the key-like tree
at its centre to symbolise unlocking the door to exercise.
In
2004 the Council's team was presented with a bronze award for its entry
'Fever Pitch'. It featured the distinctive strip colours of the District's
three professional rugby league clubs - Castleford Tigers, Featherstone
Rovers and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
The RHS Flower Show is held at Tatton Park, Cheshire, from July 19 to 23.
