From the WMDC Press and Communications Office
The
subject of domestic abuse is to be the focus of a day long seminar
organised by Stepping Forward, Wakefield Council's women's network.
The event - which is open to men as well as
women - ties in with a wider council strategy that includes a commitment
to domestic abuse policy guidelines providing information for both
managers and staff.
The
highlight of the event will be a performance by the Dead Earnest Theatre
Group to raise the profile of domestic abuse. The performance will have an
interactive element from the delegates.
Demonstrating
the council's commitment to tackling domestic abuse, the Chief Executive
John Foster will give the opening address and Councillor Peter Box,
Council Leader, will close the event.
Councillor
Box said: "The council is committed to tackling domestic abuse and
this is a way of raising the profile of this issue. The theatre group will
help to bring the issues to the fore in a different way."
The
day will begin with facts and figures on domestic abuse in the Wakefield
District from Jane McGill, the council's Domestic Abuse Co-ordinator and
there will be the opportunity for delegates to gain an understanding of
the forthcoming domestic abuse policy guidelines.
Former
Mayor of Wakefield Councillor Janet Holmes, who championed tackling
domestic abuse during her year in office, will also attend the event.
Stepping
Forward made 120 places available at the Woolley Hall seminar on February
7 but demand has far exceeded that.
