My family, the Holt's, were potters and glassblowers from Knottingley. I would appreciate any references to the Holt family and their origins.
I and my colleague Derek Poulson are trying to connect his family to the Potteries.
We know that a Thomas and Ellen Poulson had four children in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. These were Elizabeth, Alexander, Endon and Wheildon (Waldon of Ferrybridge we believe) Between 1812 and 1815 the family moved from the Potteries to South Yorkshire where Thomas and Ellen had five more children in the Mexborough area. These were Edwin Llewellin, Linas Orpheus, Diana Vandclair, Hilderbert De Lacy and Vashley (someone liked second names!)
The 1851 census for Mexborough shows a Thomas Poulson (born in Hanley and at least 62 years of age) married to a 29 year old Ellen. We suspect he fathered at least four more children:- Henry Horatio, Von Der Tan, Don Lewis de La Rosa and Clifford with a new wife. Don Lewis was my colleagues great grandfather. Edwin Llewellin had two sons:- Thomas and Edwin Llewellin who founded the Poulson Brothers Pottery we believe.
We have a raft of information on the Potteries Poulson's but as yet we cannot identify the parents of the old Thomas Poulson.
Is there any evidence to prove that the Poulson's originated from the South Wales area?
We know that when the Poulson Brothers closed the pottery in the 1920's that Derek's family were involved somewhere - are there any records of this change-over?
I am researching my fathers family THOMPSON. My father was Jack ( a schoolmaster) and he was born in 1903. He had brothers William (Bill), Percy and Bertie who were all sportsmen in the early 1900's and sisters Miriam (married name Branford) and Jeanette (Nettie).
I have an electric clock presented to my father by Castleford Cricket Club in 1927 and a cigarette box commemorating Bertie's victory in the 1923 Featherstone Tennis Championships.
I would appreciate any help anyone can give.
I am looking for my family. Mother Iris, Father Harold and Sister Audrey. The last I knew they were living at Lupset Estate, Wakefield (Lindsay Avenue and Magdalene Street I think) If anyone has any information about these people, please contact me by e-mail.
Greetings from Australia!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Merv Rossiter and I am a Rossiter family historian in need of your assistance.
I came across this site on the Internet by chance and was intrigued to see that there is a Rossiter Drive in your town of Knottingley. For some time now I have been researching a Thomas Rossiter, a mariner, who sailed his ship the 'Wave of Goole' to Austrailia in 1859. So it would appear that Thomas came from Goole.
I would like to know what the Rossiter connection with Knottingley is and if you have a local researcher who could assist me.
Many thanks and kind regards
I am trying to trace the 'Smithey' family of the 19th and 20th century. They are know to be resident in Knottingley and Ferrybridge during these periods. They are an important part of my family tree.
I would be interested to know if anyone knows or remembers the Pearson family who lived in Knottingley and Ferrybridge from the latter part of the 19th century. I believe some descendants still live there. Known names include William, Elizabeth (wife of William, nee. Atkinson), Francis Henry (son of William), William Atkinson (son of William who was the landlord of the White Swan, previously Manor House), Alice (daughter of Francis Henry), Jeanne (daughter of William Atkinson), George Edward etc...
Alice at one time worked as a secretary for John Harker Tankers and in a competition was the person who suggested that all their ships should be named with the suffix 'Dale'. She married Leslie Calder in 1938.
Jeanne married Charles Wood in 1946.
I am tracing my family tree and would appreciate any information about the Ellerington family that lived in the Knottingley area.
Charles and wife Anne (died around 1945), had sons Jack, Ted, James, Alf, Tom and Charlie. Please e-mail any information to me in Canada.
Just a not to inform everyone about my new e-mail address.
If anyone out there is researching the Austwick name I would be delighted to hear from you. My oldest Austwick is Thomas born 1733 in Knottingley.
I am researching any mention of the name Poskitt or its derivatives (Postgate, Poskett, Pasgate) etc. I know of some in the Knottingley area but any information would be useful.

I am trying to find information relating to my husbands WRIGHT family. George, born 1861 (glass bottle maker), Knottingley who married Hannah Unknown. George's father was Mathew WRIGHT who married Elizabeth Unknown. Mathew was a Potter born in Knottingley about 1828.
Would like to hear from anyone with an interest in this family.
I am researching these two surnames of families who lived in Ferrybridge between 1890 and 1904.
John William KIRKALDY (tailor/draper) lived at 37 High Street, Ferrybridge with his wife Dorcas May (nee DENT) and children. Their children were all baptised at Ferrybridge Parish Church - among them George Donald KIRKALDY, my father. Other occupations of John William, according to baptismal records, were Insurance Agent and Grate Grinder at the foundry.
Question: Was he ever a partner at the foundry?
DENT - 1891 census Eliza DENT living with two unmarried sons, Wright and Harry, in Main Street, Ferrybridge. She is my paternal grandmother. Wright DENT and John William KIRKALDY are both listed in a document (Kelly's Directory?) about Ferrybridge dated 1892, the former described as 'Secretary at the Working Men's Reading Room', and the latter listed as 'Draper / Tailor'. Neither is listed in the 1904 issue of the same document.
Any information pertaining to these two families will be greatly appreciated.
I am researching Richard Johnson Naylor my g-grandfather born Knottingley 1848. He moved to Sunderland when he married and settled there. He seems to have had brothers who stayed in Knottingley - one name may possibly be Samuel Naylor.
I would be grateful for any information.
I am looking into the Tasker name for Knottingley going back to Selby and before. We were involved with mast and block making as well as ship ownership. Does anyone have any information?
We also have links with the Brayshaw's (a merchant seafaring family) John Senior, Hannah and their son John plus sisters in Knottingley in the 1800's but what happened to them and where did they come from?
I am looking for anyone who knows of any coal miner in the 19th Century called Isaac Cook who moved to Kent. If anyone has any information would you please contact me.
I am researching my family history and have just come across the name Eskriett who lived in Knottingley.
Jack Eskriett, a Blacksmith, born circa 1813 in Holme on Wolds married Elizabeth, born circa 1812 in Richmond and they lived in High Street, Ferrybridge at the time of the 1871 Census. They had a daughter Elizabeth, born circa. 1851 in Hillam and had staying with them a grand daughter, Selina, born circa. 1861 in Ferrybridge.
I believe that Elizabeth and Jack Eskriett had another daughter Ann, born circa 1840 in Hillam who married a SHAW (Christian name not known). Ann was widowed before 1881 and lived in Doncaster Road, Ferrybridge. She was left with five boys and one girl, Thomas born circa 1862, William Francis and Cyrus, born circa 1865, Elizabeth born circa 1869, Peter born circa 1871 and George W. born circa 1876.
Apparently, George, Peter and William Francis had connections with a foundry in Holes Lane, Knottingley (fireplaces and such) and one of them either owned or lived at a sweet shop? three doors down on Hill Top on the same side as Charlie Tates' shop???? One of them lived in a bungalow at the top of Holes Lane, Knottingley and I think one of them has lived in Doncaster Road, Ferrybridge.
I understand William Francis Shaw married Sarah Alice Johnson, George W. Shaw married Sarah and Peter Shaw married Harriet.
Can anyone shed any light on my family history link to the Heskriett family name. Any information whatsoever would be much appreciated.

While researching my wife's family in Lancashire we came across her gg-grandfather Joshua Wright born on the other side of the Pennines in Knottingley 1795. Apparently his parents were Joseph (b abt 1769) and Mary but that is as far as we have got.
Would be pleased to hear from anyone who recognises this Wright family.

I am researching my wife's family history and have discovered that her grandfather's family came from Knottingley. Her great grandmother was Adelaide Tummons (born 10/7/1831 at Knottingley) and who married Thomas Copeman on a date unknown. Was he local? He was a mariner who was lost at sea, believed to be shipwrecked off the Farne Islands, date unknown. Adelaide's parents were William Tummons and Mary Brown, married 25/5/1813 at Knottingley, and had at least two other children, Anne and William. Thomas and Adelaide had at least 3 children, Richard, Robert and Thomas (christened 30/8/1868 at East Knottingley). Can anyone supply further information on these families?
My great grandparents were Tom Sargent who married Mary Ann Hargraves and I have a connection with Tracy Halkyard's family history in the letter printed below. If anyone can help either of us with further information then please contact us.
I am hoping that one of you readers can help me in a search for a photo of my Grandmother and or details of my grandparents etc.. My dad Roy Dunn was born in 1939 to Joseph and Elizabeth Dunn (nee Sargent) his mother died when he was a baby and his father when he was a small boy. He was then looked after by his sisters on North street in the Holes. He has never seen a photo of his mum and cannot remember her and we are desperate to find one. His parents were married on 10th Nov 1923. Joseph was 26 and lived at Bendles end, and Elizabeth was 22 and lived on Church Lane, Both worked as glass works hands. Joseph's father was called Hugh Dunn and worked as a carter at a glassworks. Elizabeth's Dad was called Thomas Sargent and worked as a colliery stone contractor, her mother was called Cora Elizabeth Sargent. I have been told that Elizabeth was in some way related to the Hargraves family, but as yet I have not found the connection. Does anyone know anything about my grandparents? On their marriage certificate the witness are named as William Parkes and Gertrude Rhodes. Does anyone know these people? are they a part of your family and if so do they or you own a photo of my grandparents possibly of their wedding? I have also been told that Joseph met Elizabeth whilst he was in Huddersfield or possibly Halifax hospital after being injured whilst serving during world war 1, Elizabeth was a nurse there. Altogether they had 13 children but most died during infancy and Elizabeth died during child birth. The ones I know who survived were Mary who married Frank Shaw, Violet who married Chris Wass, Phylis who married Jim Taylor, Molly who married George Wass, David who married Margret Watson and my dad Roy who married Dorothy Roberts. We have been told of one photo of Elizabeth that was taken at Dr Murphy's Garden party around 1937 which was on display in the Doctors clinic opposite St. Botolph's church, but we cannot trace what has happened to it since the clinic was closed. I hope you will be able to help us in some way,
Any details would be appreciated, and if you do have a photograph we could have a look at you would be making my dad a very happy man. Thank you.
I am researching the following surnames connected with Knottingley and nearby Cridling Stubbs, Birkin and Hirst Courtney in the 1800's : Beckitt, Beaumont, Hirst, Greenwood, Gill, Richardson, Pheasant, Cookson. Families worked mainly as Limeburners or mariners then later in the Glass making industry. My sisters husband is also from the area (they still live in Ferrybridge), and is interested in Gardner and Pearson.
William Moorhouse married Mary Sefton in Pontefract in 1773. His son William married Ann Carter in 1823. Father and son were both listed in the Baines Directory of 1822 for Knottingley as Vessel Owners and Lime Merchants. They are also shown in the Hill Top Census, Knottingley. They owned shares in the Sloop "Argo" in 1846 according to the 'Sailing Ships of Ferrybridge-Townsley links" website. I'm a descendant of William Moorhouse. My grandfather was William Septimus de Septimo Moorhouse (seventh of the seventh). I have not been able to find out anything prior to 1773. I'm unsure who William's father was and where he came from. I don't know if Mary Sefton's father really was Robert Sefton who was supposed to be a "giant"..7 or 8 ft? He's said to be in a Sefton vault at Pontefract and the Moorhouse family had a vault at a Knottingley churchyard. Did he really give his daughter her weight in gold as her dowry? Were they really connected to the Molyneux family somehow as claimed...I can't find any evidence. Has anyone else an interest in these families?

Moorhouse, son of William and Ann and born at Knottingley in 1842. His brother William Sefton went to New Zealand and became a Superintendent of one of the provinces near Christchurch. William Moorhouse (my g.g.grandfather) was a JP or Magistrate and according to the 1861 census lived at 84 Hilltop Rd, Knottingley. They spelt his name as 'Moorehouse' in the typed copy of the census, but it should be 'Moorhouse'. His parents were William Moorhouse and Mary Sefton of Pontefract but I don't know anything about them.If anyone has information I'd be happy to share my research. I have the tree showing the New Zealand and Australian descendants.

His parents were William Wilson and Jane Hawthorn (or it could be Cawthorn) I notice on the Knottingley site that a Joseph Cawthorn resided there in 1822. It could be that the surname I have has been misspelled. I would appreciate any information on this family if possible, or any living descendants still in Knottingley.
