Ron Gosney's Response

Hello Janet,

First of all I have to ask have you got the correct John Law? In the recent past I have done a bit of looking up of the Law family for Tommy Law and his sister Lily Burton (nee Law). They both joined a family history group in Ferrybridge Methodist Chapel and have been researching the family name for some 12-18 months. I don't know how far they have got back now, but I can get in touch and perhaps they will make contact.

The reason for my initial question is that there was a John Law baptised 23rd July 1815 son of Elizabeth. However, there was another John Law baptised 15th October 1815 son of Matthew and Mary (nee Adams) who married 25th November 1814. The John Law who married Eliza Spence on 25th March 1838 declared his father to be Matthew.

This John is invariably described as a Mariner or Waterman and children of John/Eliza that I have recorded with baptism dates are: 28 Mar 1839 Edwin; 17 Jan 1841 Spence; 10 Oct 1843 Mary Ann; 22 Feb 1846 Matilda; 5 Mar 1850 Benjamin; 2 Jun 1852 Emily; 9 Oct 1853 Emily; 23 Mar 1858 Fanny Louisa; 31 Jan 1860 Ada.

If you would care to just check your research to see if one of these children of John/Eliza is in your direct line?

Kindest regards

Ron Gosney
