Mr.
Ron Gosney's Response
Dear Ian
Ignoring the various corruptions of the spelling this is what I can tell
you from my transcriptions starting with census returns:
1881 Census at Marsh End

Fowlweather Tom, 19, Kilnhurst

Foweather William, 58, Labourer, Glassworks, Hunslet

Shepherds Bridge
Rowbottom Thomas, 41, Labourer, Knottingley
Rowbottom Mary, 50, wife, Wakefield
Birdsall Thomas, 15, App Glassworks, Ackworth (grandson)
Fowlweather Georgina, 9, Knottingley (visitor)
1901 Census Gas House Lane
Foweather Eliza, 64, widow, Mexborough
Foweather Walter, 27, Postman, Kilnhurst
I don't have a baptism of a Georgina shown in 1891 and perhaps Knottingley
as place of birth is erroneous, but I don't know which line she comes
from.
William the father was buried in Knottingley cemetery 7 July 1896 aged 63.
There was also a George Beevers buried 8 Jun 1897 but his age in records
is 49, perhaps a mistake?
Marriages and children:
I have no details of George who married Emma.
John Foweather married Ann Booth daughter of Wm Dobson Booth a Mariner 6
December 1876 at Christ Church Knottingley;
bap 31 Dec 1879 at C.C. Hannah buried 14 Dec 1880 aged 1
bap 21 Dec 1881 at C.C. William
Joseph Foweather married Emma Sawyer daughter of Joseph a Potter 27 July
1884 at Christ Church
Tom Foweather married Eliza Thompson daughter of William, a labourer, 20
November 1884 at Christ Church
born 20 Sep 1885 George William bap 20 Sep 1885 at C.C.
born 27 Mar 1887 Florence bap 10 Apr 1887 at C.C.
Edwin Foweather married Isabella Ellen Arnold (per your info - I have no
details)
born 22 Dec 1880 John bap 9 Jan 1881
born 13 Oct 1883!! Eliza Catherine bap 2 Sep 1883
There is obviously something amiss with birth or baptism date but the
abode is shown as Shirehampton near Bristol, and perhaps they 'made up'
with her parents for I believe the mother of Isabella was Eliza Catherine.
I have no details of Walter's marriage but he married a lady called Alice
-
children:
born 8 Mar 1911 Walter bap 2 Apr 1911 at C.C.
born 1 Jan 1914 Edith bap 29 Jan 1914 at C.C.
born 17 May 1918 Alice Eliza bap 9 Jun 1918 at C.C.
born 22 Nov 1922 Edmond bap 17 Dec 1922 at C.C.
Edith married Christopher Cawthorn sometime in Sep 1938 and they had one
son, Christopher, born in 1941 who now lives in Rehoboth, Mass, USA. I met
him over here a few years ago with his mother, who if I remember rightly
was living at Leconfield, and she was a retired schoolteacher. If still
alive she will be 90 now.
Chris was a Master Mariner and I think he now runs his own business, but
the Cawthorn family have a long tradition of going to sea as mariners and
vessel owners (sailing ships).
The first glassworks started in Knottingley in 1871 and then another about
1874 which seems to coincide with the family moving to Knottingley, but
Hunslet was another prominent glassmaking area, and many of the workers
moved between, Hunslet, Kilnhurst, Castleford and Knottingley.
I hope this
information is of some assistance and if you have any queries or questions
don't hesitate to contact me. Kindest regards
Ron
Gosney
