Ron Gosney's Response

Hi Denise

You obviously know some family history and I may be able to fill some gaps to which you refer.

The line seems to be from James Ambler who married Nancy (or Ann) Earnshaw 1st November 1818 at St. Botolph's Knottingley. They had at least 12 children, one being Thomas bapt 19 December 1825 at St. Botolph's.
Thomas married Hannah Howram 27 January 1850 at St. Botolph's and they had at least 7 children, one of whom was John (for whom you have a birthdate), but he seems to appear twice in the baptism register at St Botolph's 4th June 1852 and 26th December 1852 (This did happen sometimes when the husband was away at sea).
John married Annie Mary Adams 10 May 1876 at Christ Church, Knottingley and they seem to have:
Thomas, bapt 7 October 1877
Alice,  bapt 5 October 1879, buried 15 October 1882, aged 3
John William, no bapt, buried 20 April 1881, an infant
Ada, born 20 October 1882 bapt. 25 October 1882
Mary Ann,  no bapt , buried 10 September 1884, an infant
James, born 5 September 1888, bapt 30 September 1888
John, (known also as Jack) born 13 May 1890, bapt 7 September 1890
Agnes, born 5 July 1892, bapt 24 July 1892
Annie, born December 1894, bapt 10 March 1895

Going back another generation this is what I think is your line.

William Ambler married Sarah (don't know who or when) and they had a daughter Elizabeth, bapt 27 July 1778. Sarah, the mother, died on 10th September 1778 and was buried 12 September at St. Botolph's burial ground, Knottingley.

William re-married by Licence on 16th May 1780 at St. Gile's Church, Pontefract to Hannah Wilson of the Parish of Kippax. They had children:

John, bapt 17 June 1781, a waterman, buried 17 September 1809 aged 28
Thomas, bapt 1 December 1782
Susanna, bapt 27 January 1785, buried 29 May 1788
George, bapt 1 January 1786
James, bapt 24 March 1793 (your line)

There is a memorial stone to this family in St. Botolph's burial ground, but it has suffered weather damage. My transcription for this stone reads:

Here lieth / Sarah the wife of / William AMBLER / who died September 10th [unreadable but would be 1778] / aged 29 years / [verse unreadable] / also William AMBLER husband / of the above who died / Jany 6th 1807 aged 59 years / also Hannah his wife who / died the 10th day of August / 1832 aged 74 years.

Hannah died of cholera in the National outbreak of this disease and from this detail it seems William would be born 1747. I know from other work I have done that the name Ambler appears around the Castleford / Allerton Bywater / Kippax area.

Kindest Regards
