TWEEDIE
12 JANUARY 2006
I
am looking for any information about the Tweedie family, my
great-great-grandparents, James and Sarah Tweedie, who lived in garden
Cottages at the time of the 1881 census. Other than that I have drawn a
blank as to any other information about them. Does garden Cottages still
exist?

This
is what I can readily tell you of the Tweedy/Tweedie family from my
transcriptions:
There
is a baptism in St. Botolph's Register on 9th March 1834 of James Tweedy,
son of Mary, a servant, and a not says reputed father James Hall of
Houlton - possibly should be Oulton.
At
St. Giles Church, Pontefract, on 5th November 1854, James Tweedy, ages 22,
limburner (says his father is Jonathon) married Sarah Hurst, aged 21,
daughter of George, labourer, and they had children with baptism dates at
St. Botolph's Church, Knottingley:
29
July 1855, George Hurst
29 August 1857, Alice
6 April 1860, Mary Hannah
11 February 1865, William (buried 6 Apr 1865 age 7 weeks)
12 August 1867, Edwin (born 30 June 1867)
19 August 1870, Sarah Elizabeth (buried 16 April 1871, infant)
23 August 1875, Ada, twin, born 30 June 1875
23 August 1875, Joe, twin, born 30 June 1875 (buried 21 Nov 1875, infant)
Sarah,
the mother, was buried 23 February 1896, aged 63
George
Hurst Tweedy married Rose Hannah (don't know who, where or when) but I
think they had James William who was buried as an infant on 5th March
1879; George born 29 June 1890 and baptised at Wesleyan Church on 7 July
1880, buried 15 July 1880; Alice born 10 Jan 1884, bapt 3 Feb 1884 at Zion
Primitive Methodist Church. By 1901 census, George is shown as a
widower.
Edwin
married Sarah Ann (all I know is she was born in Gowdall) and they had
James Edwin, born 21 June 1898, baptised at Congregational Church on 17
July 1898.
As
you mention in the 1881 they are shown at Garden Cottages, well I think
these properties still stand but were better known as Becketts Row.
Kindest
Regards
