MAUDE FAMILY HISTORY
7 FEBRUARY 2006

I have just embarked on researching my family history and have discovered that my ancestors came from Knottingley and lived at Junction House on the canal. My Great Grandfather was called Charles E. Maude, and he was a Navigation Agent, as I believe his father was before him. He had three sons Cyril, Donald, and Edgar who was my Grandfather, and a daughter called Lillian. I believe that Donald was killed on the first day of the Somme.

Any information or help in who or where to get in contact with would be very much appreciated.

I can certainly give you some family history of the Maude's, but in order to avoid repetition I wondered what you already know?

Briefly, Edward Maude married Mary Moor on 3rd July 1769 at Whitkirk; one of their children, Thomas, baptised 4 June 1770, married Ruth Beaumont at Wakefield All Saints (Cathedral) on 28 March 1791. They moved to Beal, near Knottingley, where Thomas was a lock keeper. There is a memorial stone in Kellington Parish Church burial ground for Thomas and Ruth.

They had quite a number of children, one being Edward, baptised 25th May 1808 at Kellington, and he married by licence, Martha Whitteron on 10th August 1834, at St. Giles Church, Pontefract. They had at least ten children and he was Agent for the Aire & Calder Navigation, living at Junction House (often referred to locally as Maude's House) There is a stone in the Wesleyan burial ground for which I can supply a recording if you are not aware of it.

One of their children. Charles Edward, born 7th May 1855 [died 16 May 1922] married Fanny Bertha ? but I don't have the marriage record and he also resided at Junction House. I have baptisms of four children from this marriage/

Kindest Regards
Ron Gosney
