HOLMES

To the
wonderful gen sleuths in Knottingley.
We have only
very recently discovered (like last week) that the father of my great+
grandfather, Jesse Holmes, was John Holmes, mariner of Knottingley, after
applying for his marriage certificate. Jesse married Agnes Johnston in
1856 in Victoria, Australia, registration no. 652.
Searching
online, I have found Jesse's baptismal registration in Knottingley, 6th
January 1828, which fits with his marriage in 1856 when his declared age
was 28 years.
We also found
that (a) John Holmes married Mary Ann Bishop in 1810 in Howden.
We know
absolutely nothing about the family history, hence this e-mail appealing for
assistance. We posted a message on Yorkshire-L requesting a look up in the
1841 and 1851 census, as we would like to know when our John Holmes was
born, where, and to whom, and also to the siblings of Jesse, where they
were living etc. While we did not get the information we were hoping
for, we did get a message about Knottingley's website - amazing!
I am so
appreciative for this site and for the wonderful people of Knottingley to
have had the foresight to establish this service.
