I am researching my husband's family tree. His grandfather, Arthur Gummerson, was born in Knottingley in 1868, and had two children, Emily born 1895/96, and William Henry, born 27 October 1897. I have William's birth certificate on which his mother is shown as being Polly Gummerson, formerly Sykes. He was born at 8 Stuart Street, Tanshelf. Arthur Gummerson married Elizabeth Pawson in 1901. In the 1891 census, Arthur Gummerson, born 1868 in Knottingley, was resident in Aylesbury Gaol. I have had many discussions with Aylesbury Gaol to uncover a reason for his sentence but to no avail. They feel he would have been sentenced elsewhere and sent to Aylesbury. Does anyone know where I may find records of someone committing a 'deed' in or around Knottingley? I cannot find any trace of Polly, (or could it be Mary Ann?), on the 1901 census. Arthur's maternal grandparent's lived on Hill Top, Knottingley, in 1891 and a Mary Ann Sykes (Polly) lived on the next street, Weeland Road. Could this be the same Polly (Mary Ann)? In 1901, the two children, Emily and William, lived with Arthur, his new wife, and their two-month-old son, in Victoria Terrace. Where is Polly? Does this ring a bell with anyone? Carol
