SAPPER H. SAWYER
FERRYBRIDGE SOLDIER'S HEROIC CONDUCT RECOGNISED
Sapper H. Sawyer of Ferrybridge has won the Military Medal for great gallantry
and initiative during the great operations of 28th to 30th of June 1918,
East of Nieppe Forest. This N.C.O. on reaching his objective, led a
patrol to reconnoitre the bridge over the Platebeoque under heavy enemy
machine-gun fire and snipers fire and brought back valuable information re
the condition an numbers of bridges.
Seeing
a wounded man lying out in front of our consolidation he immediately went
out and carried this man to a place of safety. The Company was
holding a line of isolated posts and movement was difficult by day owing
to enemy fire. He volunteered to take an important message to
Company Headquarters when the lines were cut and after six men had been
killed or wounded trying to take it, and on his return journey was
wounded. Up to the time he was wounded he showed an utter disregard
of danger and personal safety and his conduct greatly inspired the men
with confidence - 'Bravo'
