D.S.M. WINNER
News has been
received in Knottingley that Mr. Sam Wood, the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs.
W. Wood of 17 The Croft, Knottingley, who is serving
in the Royal Navy, has been awarded the D.S.M.
He
was with the 'Prince of Wales', on which Mr. Churchill and President
Roosevelt met in the Atlantic, and was in the battle
which ended in the sinking of the 'Bismarck'. He was wounded
and spent some time in hospital in Aberdeen, but is now back at sea
again.
His
wife belongs to the Isle of Man. He is a grandson of the late Mrs. W
Wood, of Aire Street, Knottingley, who was for 45 years the local agent
for 'The Express' and three of whose sons were killed in the last war.
Another grandson is also serving in the Navy.
