Wartime Memories: Local Heroes

D.S.M. WINNER

News has been received in Knottingley that Mr. Sam Wood, the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Wood of 17 The Croft, Knottingley, who is serving in the Royal Navy, has been awarded the D.S.M.

He was with the 'Prince of Wales', on which Mr. Churchill and President Roosevelt met in the Atlantic, and was in the battle which ended in the sinking of the 'Bismarck'. He was wounded and spent some time in hospital in Aberdeen, but is now back at sea again.

His wife belongs to the Isle of Man. He is a grandson of the late Mrs. W Wood, of Aire Street, Knottingley, who was for 45 years the local agent for 'The Express' and three of whose sons were killed in the last war. Another grandson is also serving in the Navy.
