KNOTTINGLEY SOLDIER WINS A BELGIUM DECORATION
LANCE CORPORAL A. PENISTONE
A Knottingley
machine gunner, Lance Corporal A. Penistone, has had the Croix de Guerre
confirmed upon him by the Belgium Government for magnificent work done in
Flanders. At a time when all the gun team were put out of action, he
was buried up to his neck in mud by a bursting shell. By a great
effort he managed to extricate himself and although suffering slight
wounds he pulled himself together and cleared his gun for action thus,
single handed, and in the face of a heavy bombardment, he put up a fight
against the enemy.
The gallant
N.C.O, in a letter to his father and sister says,
"Well, I am
pleased to tell you that we have got a big decoration for the
family. You remember me telling you of that big 'do' we had at --
when I told you I had been blown up three times and nearly buried? Well I
have got the honour from the Belgium Government - It is the Croix de
Guerre.""
