Wartime Memories: Local Heroes

Gorporal George Wright

CORPORAL GEORGE WRIGHT

No. 19033357

The son of Albert and Rose Ann Wright, George was born in Knottingley, West Yorkshire in 1928.

At the age of 19 years he joined the Durham Light Infantry and was 'billeted' near to Barnard Castle, County Durham where he completed his six weeks training. George was then shipped to Burma with the D.L.I. and after a short time he joined with the K.O.Y.L.I regiments going to Malaya. It was while he was in Malaya that George was made Corporal.

The hot weather was hard to get used to in Malaya, a good dip in the river was one way to cope with the heat.  There was however, no way George would ever get used to the food - he never liked it.

His service was completed by serving two years in Germany and he was demobbed in 1952.

George still lives in Knottingley with his wife Jean.  They brought up a family - twins, a boy and a girl, and another boy.  They are now very happy with their own grown up family, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

We are grateful to Audrey Haggerty for submitting this account on behalf of her brother
