SERVICES WELFARE ASSOCIATION

Knottingley men and women serving with the Forces at home or abroad have received much help from the Services Welfare Association. Something of what has been done was revealed at a meeting of the Executive Committee, held at the Town Hall, Knottingley, on Friday.  The Chairman of the Association (Mr L.P. Luke) presided over the meeting and was accompanied by the hon. secretary (Mr. J. Talbot) and the hon. treasurer (Mr. W. Hollingsworth). There was a fair attendance. The secretary reported that 540 Knottingley men and women were serving, to each of whom a postal order for 5s was sent during the summer and it was intended to send a similar gift at the end of September.

There had been great difficulty in locating prospective recipients owing to frequent moves, but warm acknowledgments had been received from all over the globe and they continued to arrive.  The help of the relatives was needed however, to make and keep the list complete. Valuable assistance in the work was given by the Old Scholars Association in the town.  The Treasurer had reported that subscriptions showed in many cases an advance on last years amounts and at present there was a balance in hand of over £160.  Donations to provide parcels and gifts at Christmas were appealed for.

Up to November last year when the first annual report, and balance sheet was published, the Association recorded an income of £709 19s with gifts of knitted and other goods to the value of £85, and an expenditure on parcels and Postal Orders of £570. 13s. 7p
