The express freight train, which is the subject of this picture, was photographed from the embankment of the Knottingley line and is seen curving away from Ferrybridge towards Pontefract. The splendid stone bridge, which only carried a lane, does not now exist. In the 1950s I had a photographic permit which allowed me to enter railway property to exploit good vantage points for photography.
Our Pontefract web site contains a large selection of images
of steam trains around Pontefract by Peter Cookson.
