PLACES OF INTEREST IN ENGLANDPOLPERRO, CORNWALLText
by Michael Norfolk
Keeping an eye on the weather during our stay in Devon, we heeded the advice of the weather forecaster and headed west to the fishing village of Polperro, just across the county border into Cornwall. Polperro is a popular Cornish resort for tourists, similar in appearance and layout to one of our favourite east coast resorts, Staithes. Cottages perch on steep slopes overlooking the harbour and there are narrow winding streets just waiting for you to explore. Like many similar safe coastal harbours, Polperro was once a thriving centre for the areas smuggling but the cellars where smugglers stored their booty away from the customs men are now home to displays of local arts and crafts. The sun did eventually make an appearance as the weatherman had correctly predicted and featured here are just a small selection of the many photographs taken during our stay in Polperro. Like the two more senior subjects featured on one of the images above, we spent some time sitting on that same seat at the top of the cliffs looking out to sea. We arrived at Polperro with our coats but found ourselves sitting in short sleeves watching the sea breaking onto the rocks below.
