Knottingley Silver Band
Knottingley
Silver Band
Knottingley Silver Band Musical Director, Robin Morgan. The town of Knottingley has a top class brass band. Knottingley Silver band is one of the oldest organisations in the town. Whilst it has been generally believed that the band was founded in 1880, recent research indicates earlier roots going back to 1864.During its long existence, the band has always been an integral part of the local community and has been financially self-supporting without any benefits of sponsorship. Although the band has experienced highs and lows over the years, survival has been based on a high level of hard work, teamwork and commitment from all concerned. Although it still retains the character of a local brass band continuing to support other local organisations and charities, contest successes over the past ten years have lead to a rapid rise through the ranks of the National Grading's Structure from the Fourth Section in 1993 to elevation into the Championship Section with effect from 1st January 2004. Along the way, the band has represented Yorkshire in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in three out of the last four years, the highlight being an appearance at The Royal Albert Hall in 2000. For the first time in its history, the band now faces the prospect of playing against the big guns of Black Dyke Mills and Grimethorpe Colliery. We even feature in the Brass Band World Rankings! In 1995 the band returned to the 1st section. This is our preferred level in the brass band structure and we aim to stay. We were fourth at the Yorkshire area contest in 2006 and won a lot of prizes at the Silkstone March contest that year. The band has also now recorded three CD's. Sadly at the end of 2006 we parted company with Kevin Belcher and that has led to a bit of upheaval in the band but with the appointment of our new Musical Director, Robin Morgan, we now hope to go forward once again. Robin is from the South West but currently he lives in Kinsley. These days, the band attracts players from all over Yorkshire but a number of players are still Knottingley folk including:
Terry Clayton (Cornet) and his sons Steve (Flugel) and Roger (Solo Horn) Rehearsals are held twice weekly on Monday and Thursday nights in Knottingley. Any further information can be readily gained by contacting the band's Chairman, Garry Pearson, on 01484 665260. New players are always welcome to come and have a blow-but remember, we are a Championship Section outfit!!.
